  • Major character:

  2. All young office worker: attentive (all that young office worker are besought not to do).
  3. Young men: badger (whistles)
  4. Pearl shop clerk: hospitable and friendly (the clerk bowed)

CHARACTERIZATION:
The author presents the character by
  1.  Action (Annabel and Midge held their heads higher, …)
  2. Describing appearance (looked alike in their shape of their bodies, their movement, their style and their adornments)
  3. Revealing what others in the story think of this character: (young men grouped lethargically about whistles).
POINT OF VIEW:The author used the third person point of view; Annabel and Midge. The author used an omniscient method, because the author knew well about the characters’ personality.

SETTING:
  1. Time: afternoon, evening, Sunday, morning, September.
  2.   Place: office, shop window, pearl shop, fifth Avenue.
  3.   Condition: icily, arrogant, enthusiasm, disdain.
PLOT:
  1.   Exposition: the author tells the characters (Annabel and Midge) and their habitual.
  2.   Rising action: the characters (Annabel and Midge) imagine that they get a million dollars for buying a pearl.
  3.  Climax: The pearl is very expensive; the cost is more than what Annabel and Midge guess before.
  4.  Falling action: the cost makes them abandon their plan in buying the pearl.
  5.  Resolution: they imagine again on getting more much money than a million dollars.

THE SUMMARY:

The short story tells about two girls who are very excessive. They are Annabel and Midge. They eat luxurious food, elegant appearance, coddling their life which is unsuitable with their standard life. They are stenographic of an office that the wages of eighteen dollars and fifty cents a week for Annabel, and sixteen dollars for Midge.

Their greed of the luxurious world makes them live in fool paradise. One day, they have a big imagination of having money a million dollars. They arrange their planning on what they will do if they have million dollars. The dissimilarity of planning bursts their relationship a while. Then their relationship is well while they want to use the money for the same thing, for buying a pearl.

Continually they go to the pearl shop for asking the cost of the pearl that they dreamt. Unconfidently they enter the pearl shop. Their arrogances are wedged of all the luxurious things in the shop. Their luxurious style of life is nothing than the luxurious things in the shop.

After knowing the cost of the pearl are more expensive than what were they think before, the go out from the pearl shop with a degradation on their face. In the middle of their degradation, Annabel arouses their life enthusiasm by dreaming of getting more than a million dollars money.

MORAL VALUE:
I think, from this short story I can took a lesson that "just be alive on our standard life or it will blotting out our life freedom then".
